CATSS is a test of vocabulary size, the number of words the learner knows, and strength, which is the combination of four aspects of knowledge of word meaning (productive recall, receptive recall, productive recognition, receptive recognition). Vocabulary size is tested via samples of words from different word frequency levels. The vocabulary strength element is reflected in four test stages, each test stage testing one modality for each word, starting with the most difficult one (productive recall) and ending with the easiest one (receptive recognition)...
